Attendees: Ryan Galluzzo, Adam Madlin, Jim Fenton, Seetharama Durbha, Sal D’Agostino, Tom Jones, Christopher Spottiswoode, Robert Faron, Colin Wallis, Anne Racuya-Robbins, Jonathan Rosenberg, Kennie Kwong, Kaliya Hamlin, Win Baylies, Mary Hodder

Objectives

  • Continue discussion of anonymity and pseudonymity
  • Discuss glossary progress and workplan progress
  • Discussion of distinction between identity and attributes

Glossary Update

  • Glossary is with the MC for review.
  • Adam provided an overview of the steps included in the approval process as defined in special rule of order #1 from the IDESG rules of association, available here.

Taxonomy Workplan/Terms of Reference

  • Jim Fenton submitted a set of priority terms that he feels should be considered by the committee before turning to an “on demand” format. These were distributed to the listserv.
  • Tom Jones submitted a definition of “taxonomy” for consideration to the listserv; this is not being proposed as a “term” but as to try and inform the group of differences between a “taxonomy” and “terminology”
  • The terms of reference are still in production.

Pseudonymous Digital Identity, Anonymous Interaction, Pseudonymous Interaction

  • Current Definitions:
  • Pseudonymous interaction: An interaction for which the data released is not sufficient to infer the entity involved, but for which multiple interactions to the same relying party may be associated with each other.
  • Anonymous interaction: An interaction for which the data released and collected is not sufficient to infer the entity involved, and for which information to correlate multiple interactions to the same relying party is not provided.
  • Pseudonymous digital identity: A digital identity whose attributes values are not verified.
  • There has been significant discussion of these terms on the listserv recently; most discussion revolved around the use of the term “verified” in the definition of pseudonymous identity
  • Is it possible to have verified attributes associated with pseudonyms? Strongly believes that verified attributes must be included in the way we use the term pseudonymous digital identity
  • There is also concern that, by defining an identity as a set of attributes, we have confused this conversation; where does the identity end and additional attributes begin?
  • Seetharama believes that different people are viewing the “set” of attributes in a different way and it is resulting in confusion; a “set” is too ambiguous
  • The intent of the current definitions is not to exclude the use of verified attributes with a pseudonym; however the current definition may not be clear enough on that point.
  • Jim suggested that if we focus not on verifiability, but on the ability (or inability) to link transactions and data to an identity then the verifiability of the attributes is not necessarily relevant.
  • The group will continue to debate this term and new definitions will be posted to the listserv.

Actions

  • Kaliya will be proposing new definitions for Pseudonym and Pseudonymous Digital Identity.
  • Jim will be providing additional details on how the AHG can focus on the “data release point” rather than verification
  • Please review Jim’s suggested “must have” terms prior to next meeting.
  • Please review Seetharama’ s proposed “on demand” process prior to next meeting—will be discussed next week.
