Objectives

  • Follow up on next steps for the AHG (terms of reference)
  • Continue discussion of Pseudonymous Digital Identity, Pseudonymous Interaction, and Anonymous Interaction.

General

  • Anne believes we need a formal procedure for approving the notes for each meeting; Eric Krum thinks it does not need to be done.
  • He suggested posting the notes and giving the AHG a set period to provide suggested changes. It does not need to be formal or cumbersome.
  • Adam will be setting aside a brief time period at the beginning of each call to allow members to provide anyot the meeting minutes. Any changes will be noted in the minutes of current meeting and updated accordingly.
  • Anne needs to be added to the list of attendees on last week’s meeting minutes.
  • There were no other concerns over the meeting notes from last week.

Glossary Status:

  • A subcommittee of the Privacy Committee will be meeting today to discuss the glossary in order to provide recommendations to the full committee; which will meet to approve the document in 2 weeks.
  • Once the privacy committee review is complete, the document should go through the MC for review and then enter the Plenary approval process.
  • Adam walked through the version of the Glossary that was submitted to the other committees for review. He recently made some format modification based on initial feedback from some committees.
  • Jim stated that cosmetic changes do not need to be re-submitted to the Privacy Committee; as long as the seven terms and definitions have not changed.
  • The word version of the official document is available on the wiki.

Taxonomy v. Glossary v. Terminology

  • This AHG is actually focused more on terminology and glossary development; many have expressed confusion over the use of “taxonomy” in our title. Since what we are creating is not considered to be taxonomy.
  • Mike suggested that, as long as our product is clearly labeled as being a glossary there should be no issues.
  • Sal thinks we should bring the inconsistencies of the wiki site to the attention of the communications committee; he does not think that the first page clearly relays the actions of the committee.
  • Adam will bring this up at the next chairs call.
  • Moving forward, the AHG will no longer use “terminology” in our title or wiki links to ensure consistency and avoid confusion.

AHG Plan/Next Steps

  • At last week’s meeting, discussion focused on developing next steps for the committee.
  • Much of the conversation focused around an on-demand role where the AHG would explore terms at the request of other committees. Transition to this new process will take place once the AHG has completed the current three terms being discussed and reviewed.
  • Tom suggested the AHG review the use cases to help identify terms that may need to be defined.
  • Seetharama suggested monitoring the other committees so we can identify terms that are being used in different ways by different committees; this could be used to prioritize the items the AHG addresses.
  • Robert Faron thinks the AHG could serve to provide structure to the different terms that are circling around the different committees.
  • Suzanne pointed out that the “on demand” approach also included pulling people in from the recommending committees to support the definition of terms.
  • Adam would like to take a future meeting to discuss any immediate terms that may need to be defined.
  • He would also like to set a meeting to define the new process/approach.
  • There was also suggestion that we have a “terminology monitoring plan”—essentially some way to ensure that the terms we have defined are being used properly.
  • Adam will begin development of a workplan for the AHGs new approach.

Anonymity/Pseudonymity Breakout Session

  • Held a panel discussion that was facilitated by Bob Blakely; Jim Fenton, Mike Garcia, and Adam participated on behalf of the Taxonomy AHG.
  • The session was focused on having a conversation and not next steps or feedback specifically for the AHG.
  • Bob Blakely is working on developing notes for the session.
  • Jim Fenton suggested dropping the term "Peudonymous Digital Identity"
  • Tom Jones suggested striking the second two terms(both "anonymous" terms); he does not see how they can exist in an operating identity system. The system does not know whether or not an identity is pseudonymous or not
  • Seetharama thinks that this is an implementation issue and that we should define these terms so that everyone has a common understanding of what is meant.
  • Mike suggested we group the two sets of terms into “interaction” and “identity” then address them in that order.
  • Sal suggested we should start by determining if we need to address these terms at all.
  • Current suggested definitions are:
  • Pseudonymous Digital Identity
  • A digital identity whose attributes values are not verified.
  • Pseudonymous Interaction
  • An interaction for which the data released is not sufficient to infer the entity involved, but for which multiple interactions to the same relying party may be associated with each other.
  • Anonymous Interaction
  • An interaction for which the data released is not sufficient to infer the entity involved, and for which information to correlate multiple interactions to the same relying party is not provided.
  • Suzanne thinks that unlinkability should be included in this definition; Tom feels this gets into the internal operations of IDPS or RPs and is not relevant to the transmission of data which has been the AHGs focus to date.

Close Out

  • Adam will not be able to lead next week’s call and will reach out to members to try and find a substitute.

Actions

  • Develop workplan for next steps (Adam)
  • Provide input to Adam on a “taxonomy process” (All)
  • Develop Terms of Reference (Sal)—To be discussed at the next meeting.
